1. The early 1960's were the time when Claremont was developed into a character suburb, making the smaller surrounding suburbs more popular as well, including Mt. Claremont.
2. In 1964 Eric Edgar Cooke, an infamous serial killer who committed 22 known crimes in the Western suburbs. Cooke was the last man to be hanged in Western Australia. 3. In 1965, Nedlands Library opened and was popular for the community and still is. 4. In 1966, Claremont Hospital was home to nearly 1700 long term Patients.
5. The 1960's were also the time of Lake Claremont's descent into a rubbish tip, the garbage was used to fill in the marshy areas of the lake. |
6. In the 1960's Graylands Hospital extended its campus to Shenton Park.
7. 1968 was the year when Nedlands new Secondary Teachers college opened. 8. 1970, David Jones first Claremont store was opened after two years of construction. 9. In 1971-72, the Claremont Coles superstore was built and opened, continuing the popular franchise, the expanded over Western Australia in the next 50 years.

Also in 1972, the well known Mental Hospital, 'Claremont Hospital' was closed and divided into two separate hospitals: Swanbourne Hospital, encompassing the original 1904 buildings, which cared for psychogeriatric patients, and adults with developmental disabilities while Graylands Hospital treated acute psychiatric patients. |
